The Facts About Prostate Cancer and Black Men

 



  1. Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer among Black men in the US, and all Black men are at high risk for this disease.

  2. Black men are diagnosed at a rate 80% higher and die at a rate more than twice (120%) that of white men - this is the largest racial disparity for any major cancer for men or women.

  3. Early detection screening is key to beating prostate cancer. Men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer have a 10-year survival rate of more than 98%. With later-stage diagnosis, the 10-year survival rate ranges between 18-35%.

  4. Knowledge about prostate cancer treatments and managing survivorship is critical for patients’ quality of life.

  5. The American Cancer Society estimates show an alarming increase of 80% for prostate cancer diagnoses from 2019 (174,650) to 2025 (313,780). This is the largest increase for any major cancer.

  6. Black men should know their PSA number each year and what it means!
